Mahmoud has just finished building a guest house in Tunis next to his studio and gallery and overlooking the enchanting Lake Qarun.
The house is inspired both by traditional Upper Egyptian or Saeedi dwellings as well as by the designs of renowned Egyptian architect, Hassan Fathi, famous for his 'Architecture for the poor' which incorporates appropriate technology such as mud brick or 'Adobe' and other local materials.
The house is in effect one long room separated by large imposing arches to create separate spaces each of which has a high domed ceiling.
As well as keeping the house cool even in the heat of summer, the domes which are made of brick, are studded with coloured glass which bring a tranquil play of light into the space.
The house when it is furnished will have a cooking area, fridge, seating areas and two beds in the smaller room at the far end. The is also a bathroom and shower room. Extra beds are available
The domes are made of bricks and coloured glass.
